Turkey arrests two lieutenants over murder plot

Turkish security forces have reportedly detained and taken two naval lieutenants into custody on charges of attempting to murder two army admirals, Press TV reported.

According to a report published by Today's Zaman newspaper, the lieutenants had allegedly received orders for the planned assassinations from two colonels named Tayfun Duman and Orhan Yucel.

The new arrests follow those of three naval lieutenants late on Tuesday evening.

The prosecutors accused the lieutenants of planning assassinations against the two admirals, whose first names were given as Ugur and Metin.

During the initial hearing at Istanbul's 11th High Criminal Court, the lieutenants were charged with 'being a member of an armed organization'.

The lieutenants were also accused of being involved in a sex and drug trade operation in a bid to provide funds for Ergenekon.

The Ergenekon case has been filed against more than 200 people on charges that they sought to establish an unlawful organization to provoke a series of events that would pave the way for a military coup in Turkey.

The shadowy Ergenekon group has been indicted of at least two violent attacks -- the bombing of a newspaper in 2006 and an attack on a court in the same year, in which a judge was killed.
