Turkey has back-up in case Russia stops supplying gas

Baku, Azerbaijan, Dec. 1

By Rufiz Hafizoglu - Trend:

If Russia stops supplying gas to Turkey, Ankara will increase gas purchases from Azerbaijan and Iran, TRT Haber quoted Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Simsek as saying Dec. 1.

Simsek said Ankara can also review the issue of additional supplies of liquefied gas to Turkey.

Fifty percent of the total gas imported by Turkey comes from Russia.

The tension between the two countries has increased after Turkey downed Russian Su-24 bomber in Turkey's airspace. Following the incident, the relations between Turkey and Russia deteriorated significantly.

Turkey imports gas from Azerbaijan via the South Caucasus Pipeline (SCP, Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum). Ankara has a contract for annual purchase of 6.6 billion cubic meters of gas from Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz offshore field.

Turkey imports gas from Iran, Russia and Azerbaijan. Ankara also signed agreements with Algeria and Nigeria for supply of 4.4 billion cubic meters and 1.2 billion cubic meters of liquefied natural gas a year, respectively.
