New Istanbul airport serves over 200,000 passengers

In February 2019, the new airport in Istanbul served 202,500 passengers, Trend reports referring to Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of Turkey.

Domestic flights served 119,200 passengers, while international flights served 83,300 passengers.

The ministry noted that in February 2019, 1,678 flights were made, 911 of which accounted for domestic flights and while 767 flights were international.

In February 2019, the volume of freight at the Istanbul airport amounted to 2,088 tons, 837 tons of which accounted for domestic and 1,251 tons for international flights.

The opening ceremony of the new airport in Istanbul was held on October 29 and was attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Minister of Transport and Infrastructure of Turkey Mehmet Cahit Turhan.

The third airport was built near the Lake Terkos in northern Istanbul.

Limak-Kolin-Cengiz-MaPa-Kalyon consortium of companies won the tender for construction of the airport.

The first airport in Turkey was built in 1912 and was used for military purposes.

In 1953, Istanbul airport was opened for international flights for the first time, and in 1985 it was renamed in honor of the founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
