Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov received a delegation led by the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for the Assistance Mission for Iraq Jan Kubis.
During the meeting, the sides exchanged views on regional issues of mutual interest, as well as on projects that are being implemented by the UN to ensure peace and stability, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry told Trend.
Informing about the negotiations on settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Mammadyarov noted that the current status quo, as it was repeatedly noted by the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairing countries, is unacceptable and unsustainable.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
