AZERBAIJAN SIGNALS OFFICIAL START OF PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS

The Central Election Commission of Azerbaijan (CEC) has confirmed the timing for the major action plan and corresponding arrangements for the preparation and holding of parliamentary elections on November 6.

At the July 5 meeting, the CEC chairman Mazahir Panahov presented the planned schedule and submitted it to the members of the Commission for approval.

In his speech, Mr. Panahov stressed the exclusive importance of the document, which вЂ" according to him вЂ" had been prepared in an extensive and thorough manner, and reflected proposals by CEC members.

He also said that the Schedule will be later submitted to the Milli Majlis (parliament).

The approval of the document also means the official start of the parliamentary elections.

Yesterday, July 5, President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree, in which the lections had been scheduled for November 6.

In accordance with the Planned Schedule, the nomination of candidates is to commence at least 105 days before the voting day. Subsequently, the process is to be completed at least 70 days before November 6. Meanwhile, the propaganda and agitation campaign may be launched 60 days before the voting day and must be finished 24 hours before the opening of polling stations.

To get registered with district election commissions (DEC), a candidate must submit subscription lists bearing signatures of 450 citizens of Azerbaijan. The corresponding decision of the DEC must be made within 10 days following the submission of the required package of documents, including subscription lists.
