An agreement on the transportation of Kazakh goods using the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway between Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey and Kazakhstan is planned to be signed by the end of this year, the Kazakh Ambassador to Azerbaijan Serik Primbetov told journalists on Wednesday.

According to the ambassador the agreement is planned to be signed by transport ministers of the four countries. The drawing up of the document is currently in progress with the volumes of freight transportation being specified.

Construction work of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway will be completed in the second half of 2013.

The volume of freight transport through the new route will amount to five million tons during the first stage, 10 million tons in the second and 15 million tons in the final stage.

In total, upon completion of the project the volume of freight transportation through the railway will be increased to reach 50 million tons.

Construction of new 105 kilometre long rail road is planned for the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars project. In addition, a section of the Akhalkalaki-Marabda-Tbilisi railway will be reconstructed in Georgia, which will raise its transportation capacity to 15 million tons of freight a year. Construction of a station for train enabling the transition from the Georgian to the European track is planned at Akhalkalaki.
