CEC: Uzbekistan is ready to hold presidential elections

The Central Election Commission (CEC) of Uzbekistan is finalizing preparations for the presidential elections to be held on Sunday March 29, CEC chairman Mirza-Ulugbek Abdusalomov said at a briefing on Saturday.

"The election campaign for the presidential election held in the new socio-political and socio-economic conditions, significantly increased inter-party competition, political and civic activity of the population", CEC chairman said.

"As part of the program of basic measures for the preparation and holding of presidential elections by election commissions at all levels made a great work aimed at ensuring the electoral rights of citizens", Abdusalomov said.

In accordance with the law there was established 14 districts, more than nine thousand polling stations, including 44 polling stations at representations of Uzbekistan in foreign countries, it was formed the district and precinct election commissions.

Polling stations are provided with everything necessary - communication, computers and office equipment, law literature. In specially selected areas were equipped with cabins for secret voting, ballot boxes installed.

In the voter lists included the names of 20 million 798.052 thousand citizens. All voters notified by precinct election commissions about time and place of voting.

Under the law, voters who can not be on election day at their place of residence, provided the right to vote in advance.

During the election campaign voters were given all opportunities to know about election programs, biographies of presidential candidates through the media or directly at election meetings of candidates with voters.

As previously reported, candidates from four political parties are to participate in the upcoming election. They are incumbent President Islam Karimov from the Liberal Democratic Party, the member of the parliamentary faction, chairman of the committee for democratic institutions, NGOs and citizens' self-government bodies, Akmal Saidov - from the National Democratic Party Milly Tiklanish; the chairman of the Central Council of the People's Democratic Party of Uzbekistan (PDPU) Hotamzhon Ketmonov - from the PDPU, the chairman of the executive committee of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) Adolat, Narimon Umarov - from SDP.

According to the country's CEC, 135 electoral districts, 9,058 thousands of polling stations, including 44 - with offices in Uzbekistan abroad, have been established for the election. Over 340 representatives of local and foreign media will cover the election.

To observe the preparation for the election and the election itself, more than 300 international observers, including those from the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, OSCE, CIS, other international organizations, and other states.

During the pre-election campaign, in accordance with the CEC's rules, all the candidates were allowed to have equal rights for using the media channels on TV, radio. Each candidate was given 900 minutes of free air time. The candidates' pre-election programs were planned to be published in the country's "Khalk Suzi", "Nation's word" and "Truth of the East".
