The number of prisoners decreased by 57.2 percent in Georgia during the past year. The Georgian Ministry of Corrections and Legal Assistance said as of May 6 that there were 10,114 convicts in the country.
This figure decreased by 57.2 percent compared to the data for May 6, 2012 that indicated that there were 23,656 prisoners in the country at the time.
As of May 6, 2013, some 8,625 prisoners were released following an amnesty act.
The law on "Amnesty" was approved by the Georgian Parliament on December 21, 2012.
