BİSHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, November 6. Kyrgyzstan wishes Azerbaijan a successful COP29, said Zheenbek Kulubaev, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan, Trend reports.
He made the remark during a meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Turkic States in Bishkek.
"Global climate change presents a serious challenge to sustainable development. The Turkic states are actively advancing the international Mountain Partnership Agenda, supporting the UN General Assembly Resolution on the Sustainable Development of Mountain Regions, and working together on fulfilling our commitments. We also plan to hold an annual climate conference to keep the dialogue on mountain partnership and climate change moving forward.
I look forward to your support for this initiative at COP29 in Baku. I wish Azerbaijan and Brazil every success in hosting this important event and invite everyone to attend the high-level meeting on mountain partnership and climate on November 13," he said.
To note, in under a week, Azerbaijan will host COP29, the decision about which was made at the COP28 plenary meeting held in Dubai on December 11 last year.
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Rio Earth Summit in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system. The acronym COP (Conference of Parties) stands for Conference of Parties, which is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.
A total of 198 countries are parties to the convention. Unless the parties have decided otherwise, COP is held annually. The inaugural COP event took place in March 1995 in the bustling city of Berlin, Germany, with its secretariat setting up shop in Bonn.
