Relevant government authorities of Turkmenistan jointly with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has developed an action plan to reduce statelessness in the country, Turkmen State Migration Service said in its report on Saturday.

This agency deals with citizenship issues in the country. Employees of the Service registered persons residing in the territory of Turkmenistan with void documents and those who are not citizens of foreign countries.

Turkmenistan is working in this area to strengthen the national legal framework acceding to the UN General Assembly Convention on the Status of Stateless Persons and the Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness.

In 2011, according to the report, citizenship was granted to more than 3,000 people living in the country and those without citizenship by a decree of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov. In particular, the question is about refugees who arrived from Tajikistan and Afghanistan.
