Russia, Moscow / corr. Trend R.Agayev, S.Aliyev / The Azerbaijan railways possess enough potential to increase the volume of the transportations. "Azerbaijan State Railway Department (ASRD) possesses big resources for increasing the cargo transportations and is capable to satisfy the demands for transportations even in case of increase by 40-50%," the ASRD Chief, Arif Askerov, said while making a speech at the meeting of the Council for Railway Transport of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in Moscow, Trend Special Correspondent reports. According to Askerov, being located in the cross of the key international transport corridors, Azerbaijan and its transport communication have ensured transit transportation over many years. Increasing the transit and export-import transportations is the optimal way of increasing the profitability and economical stability. In addition, Askerov said that the Head of the country and especially the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, pay a special attention to the work of the railway, development of its material and technical base and implementation of the key functions. Therefore, the Government of the Country has adopted "Program of development of Azerbaijan railways till 2010" , which envisages concrete reconstruction of the railways and renewal of all infrastructure. "As an evidence of the development of the Country economy and intensive use of TRACECA corridor, the volume of the cargo turnover has increased by 3,5 times as comprised with 1996. The daily volume of 17,000 tons in 1995 increased up to 56,000 tons in 2006," Askerov said.
