GUAM Countries Demand Respect for Territorial Integrity and Sovereignty

Georgia, Tbilisi, 11 April / Trend corr N. Kirtskhalia/ At the meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council, Georgia on behalf of GUAM demanded respect for their territorial integrity and sovereignty of GUAM countries.

The Georgian Ambassador to OSCE Victor Dolidze made a statement at the meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council in Vienna. He said to journalists that the statement had been made on behalf of GUAM and regarded the integrity of the GUAM member countries - Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova.

"We drew attention to the necessity of strengthening the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the GUAM countries, which has been facing pressure from several countries," Dolidze said.

The Georgian Ambassador said that it is a 'most painful' issue for the GAUM countries. GUAM's position on re-forming the OSCE was confirmed at the meeting.

Four post-Soviet republics; Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova, established the GUAM format in 1997 during a summit of presidents of European Union countries in Strasburg. In 2006, at the first summit of the organization in Kiev a decision was made to announce GUAM as an international organization.
