Azerbaijani Opposition Party to Stage Demonstration

Azerbaijan, Baku, 21 April / corr. Trend J. Babayeva/ Azerbaijani opposition party Muasir Musavat, whose chairman is going run for presidency, plans to stage a demonstration involving thousands of supporters in Baku to heighten social and economic demands, Hafiz Hajiyev, the chairman of party said to Trend on 21 April.

The presidential elections in Azerbaijan will be held on 15 October.

Isa Gambar, the chairman of Musavat party and Sardar Jalaloglu, the chairman of Democratic Party of Azerbaijan have stated their plans to run for presidency from the opposition. The ruling Yeni Azerbaijan has announced that it will nominate the President Ilham Aliyev, the party chairman for presidency.

According to Hajiyev, they will send notification to the Baku City Administration on 21 April.

"The square in front of Narimanov cinema, the Ukraine square and the square near Ganjlik underground station will be suggested as a venue for the demonstration," he said. According to the party chairman, Muasir Musavat supporters are expected to attend the demonstration. "The party is not planning to hold an unauthorized demonstration," Hajiyev said.

The demonstration will protest against the OSCE Minsk Group activities as OSCE member-states including Russia, France and U.S. voted against the Resolution on Occupied Territory of Azerbaijan on 14 March in UN General Assembly.

Muasir Musavat party was founded in 2000 and officially registered in 2002. The Party considers itself to be a constructive opposition to the government. Hafiz Hajiyev has been chairman of the party since its establishment. He ran state concern on fish industry until 1990s. Hajiyev was arrested in 1993, charged with abusing authorities and sentenced to 5-and-a-half years of jail. He was released after 18 months but was again detained in 1995 and sentenced to 3 years imprisonment on charges of illegally storing arms.
