Forty-five women, including four girls, were victims of domestic violence in the past two years in Azerbaijan, Deputy Interior Minister Orudj Zalov said at a parliamentary hearing on the issue of women's rights.

"From Jan. 1, 2007 to this November, 17,354 criminal acts against women have been reported. During this period, 45 women, including four girls, were killed as a result of domestic violence," Zalov said.

A bill on domestic violence has already been submitted to parliament for review and was returned for revision in 2008.

The International Day for Fighting Violence Toward Women is celebrated annually Nov. 25 in accordance with a U.N. General Assembly decision dated Dec. 17, 1999.

According to the deputy minister, dozens of police officers were punished during the reporting period for showing negligence in fighting domestic violence.

The ministry's hotline "102" receives 1,500-2,000 calls per day; 30-40 percent are from women.
