Budapest discusses GUAM countries’ positions consolidation within Eastern Partnership

Informal meeting of heads of the GUAM member states' delegation, who arrived in the capital of Hungary to attend a meeting on the Eastern Partnership with the European Union troika, the Baltic countries and the Visegrad Group, was held in Budapest.

During the meeting issues of further consolidation of the GUAM member states' positions within the Eastern Partnership were discussed, the need to develop joint projects to submit to the European Union with a view to joint implementation was stressed, the GUAM Secretariat said.

Current cooperation issues in the format of the organization were also discussed.

Four post-Soviet republics; Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova, established the GUAM format in 1997 during a summit of presidents of European Union countries in Strasburg. In 1999, Uzbekistan joined this format, but after 4 years, quitted. In 2006, the first summit of this format in Kiev decided to declare GUAM an international organization with a new name: "Organization for Democracy and Economic Development - GUAM".
