Politics Materials 25 December 2006 13:52 (UTC +04:00)

Mazahir Panahov, the Central Elections Commission (CEC) Chairman, said in talks with journalists that the post of Secretary representing the opposition at the CEC is still vacant and members of parties representing the minority at the CEC should define a candidate to take this post, Trend reports.

He said that in accordance with the procedures, CEC members representing the minority at the parliament should nominate their candidature. Then the issue should be included in the agenda of the CEC session. Secretary is elected through elections. The initiative should be made by 6 members of the commission representing the minority at CEC. Five members of the commission, representing the minority at the parliament, have to set up their activities. My interference into the issue is incorrect from the ethic aspect, said Mr. Panahov.

CEC has 18 members, including 6 representatives from the New Azerbaijan Party at Milli Majlis [Azerbaijan Parliament], 6 non-party members, 6 representatives of parties in minority.

The opposition party Musavat, which has 5 members at the parliament, refuses to sending its representative to CEC.
