Amendments to Criminal Code Discussed

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr. Trend K.Zarbaliyeva / A meeting of experts took place at the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan regarding reforms to the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan. According to information provided by the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan, a working group consisting of representatives of the Presidential Administration, Ministry of Justice, Interior Ministry, Ministry of National Security, Republic Prosecutor's Office, Supreme Court, Baku State University and advocates was created in June 2006 to hold reforms in the Criminal Code as a significant part of the reforms within the legal court system. The working group has studied the opinions of experts regarding the Criminal Code and prepared its recommendations towards its improvement.

The Council of Europe Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Baku, Denis Bribosia, gave a speech at the meeting. He expressed his feelings towards the recommendations made by the working group. The experts organized debates on several items of the Criminal Code and made relevant amendments and annexes. The amendments to the Criminal Code are linked with the issue that Azerbaijan has joined the International Convention and fulfil its obligations. The items of the Convention regarding protection of human rights and main liberties, rights of children, etc. were taken into consideration while making the amendments.
