Detained Journalist of Azerbaijani Newspaper to Continue Hunger Strike till his Demands are met

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. К.Zarbaliyeva / Ganimat Zahid the detained chief editor of the Azerbaijani Azadlig newspaper will continue hunger strike until his demands are met, as stated by Elchin Behbutov, the human rights activist, after his meeting with the detainee in the isolation cell 1.

The Yasamal District Court of Baku sentenced Zahidov two months detention on 11 November. Zahidov is charged of hooliganism and deliberate damage to human health. If the accusations against Zahidov are proved right he would be sentenced for three years in prison.

According to Behbutov, the journalist launched hunger strike on 8 December demonstrating protest against illegal arrest of journalists. Behbutov said Zahid had no complaints on condition and relation towards him in the isolation cell. Presently, nine journalists are prisoned in Azerbaijan for defamation and insult.
