Place Defined for First Research Nuclear Reactor of   Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku, 19 March / corr Trend E.Huseynli /The place for the construction of first Nuclear Reactor in Azerbaijan has been defined, Agil Garibov, the Director of the Institute of Radiation Problems of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, told Trend .

In mid 2007, UN International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Azerbaijan Government gave official agreement for the construction of the first research nuclear reactor in the territory of Azerbaijan. The work here will commence in 2009 and will complete in 2013.

According to Garibov, the research nuclear reactor will be built in the territory of Pirakushkul settlement of Absheron district, located 20km of Baku. At present, a map of the area is under development. The approximate capacity of the reactor will comprise 25-30 MW, and cost of the project is estimated at $25-30mln.

The Greens Party of Azerbaijan protested against the application of nuclear technology, referring it as a serious damage to the human health and ecology. The Party said that Azerbaijan should use other alternative energy sources like wind, water and sun energy.
