Appeal of Imprisoned Azerbaijani Editor-in-Chief Denied

Azerbaijan, Baku, 25 April / corr. Trend T. Abbasov/ The Appeal Court of the Baku city held a preparatory meeting on appeal of Ganimat Zahid, the editor-in-chief of Azadlig ( Liberty) newspaper.

The editor-in-chief is charged with hooliganism and intentionally injuring health and he was sentenced to 4 year jail. The other accused, Vusal Hasanov was sentenced to one and half year jail.

During the sitting of the Appeal Court of the Baku city Zahid's lawyer Elchin Sadigov appealed to conduct physical examination of Hasanov once again and to continue proceedings with the full investigation.

The Prosecutor General stated that the petition is ungrounded and requested to continue the sitting without investigation.

The Court decided to deny the appeal after the discussions.

The judicial inquiry of the Appeal Court is fixed for 7 May.

Ganimat Zahid was imprisoned because of incident that took place on 7 November at 4:00 p.m. in front of the Azerbaijan publishing house where Azadlig's premises is located. Zahidov disputed with Sevilgade Guliyeva and Vusal Hasanov which developed into a fight. Hasanov appealed the Police Department of Yasamal district of Baku, went through physical examination and he was given police certificate on craniocerebral injury.

Zahid was sentenced to 2 months of jail by the Yasamal district court on 11 November.

Three journalists have been imprisoned in Azerbaijan at present.
