Azerbaijan to join Convention for Protection of Individuals Regarding Automatic Processing of Personal Data

Azerbaijan will join the Convention for Protecting Individuals Regarding Automatic Processing of Personal Data. A working group of representatives from relevant structures has been established for this purpose, Justice Ministry State Register Service Acting Chief Mehdi Najafov told Trend .

The working group suggested that Azerbaijan accede to the convention given certain conditions. One is that Azerbaijan will not guarantee the implementation of the convention's provisions on territories occupied by Armenia until their release. Moreover, Azerbaijan will not perform duties arising from the provisions with regards to Armenia, he said.

The purpose of the convention is to protect the rights and fundamental freedoms of every person, regardless of nationality or residence, specifically in regards to processing personal data.

Najafov encourages the country to accede to the convention and believes it is necessary to improve the Law on Information, Informatization and Protection of Information and adopt the Law on Personal Data before making a final decision.

The Convention for the Protection of Individuals Regarding Automatic Processing of Personal Data was adopted on Jan. 28, 1981.
