"The Press Council's complaint commission has received applications concerning the activity of four newspapers. This matter will be examined at a meeting of the commission to be held this week," Rahim Huseynzade, Executive Secretary of the Press Council, told Trend .

The Press Council declared 2009 a year of struggle with "racketeer newspapers". The Council has put 95 newspapers on "the black list".

According to Huseynzadeh, one of the complaints has relation to a swindle committed by the leadership of one of the newspapers against citizens. "The chief of this newspaper that I do not want to name exactly took a certain amount of money from a certain person and promised to employ him in an exchange. Having failed to keep his promise, he offered this person a certificate of this newspaper instead of money," Huseynzadeh said.

Founders of some newspapers do not shrink even from trading with certificates. "To solve such problems it is necessary to register media outlets anew taking into account the Council's opinion, to a certain extent," Huseynzadeh underscored.

Around 4,000 media outlets have been registered in Azerbaijan. Only 600 of them are operational at the moment. Around 400 newspapers and magazines are publicized, 8 nationwide television channels, 14 regional television channels and 13 cable television channels are broadcasting. In Azerbaijan, there are approximately 50 electronic media outlets, around 20 news agencies, and the rest are Websites.
