Today, the Azerbaijani Pardon Commission will hold its first meeting.

"It is planned to hold the first meeting of the the Azerbaijani Presidential Pardon Commission today," MP Vagif Samadoglu said.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Alliyev signed a pardon decree Dec. 25, 2009. The decree applies to 99 prisoners.

According to 46 pardon orders signed since 1994, 4,957 people were released from jail. Fourteen were signed by Aliyev and 32 by late President Heydar Aliyev. Eight acts of amnesty have also been signed covering 40,000 prisoners.

The meeting will consider the requests received by members of the commission in connection with the pardon. Regarding signing the pardon decree on the eve of the Novruz holiday, the MP said that the matter is under Aliyev's authority.

Each member of the commission received dozens of appeal from prisoners and their families.

"The names of persons to be included in a list of pardoned, will be known only after the discussions," Samadoglu said.
