Jews in Azerbaijan are proud of the fact that they are Jews, Israel's Chief Rabbi Shlomo Omar said at a meeting with the Chairman of the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations Hidayat Orujov.

"As at present there are states and nations, who have a sharp position against the Jews. But Azerbaijan's experience can be an example for other countries. We highly appreciate it - as public policy, as well as moral riches of your people," Omar said.

The Chairman of the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations Hidayat Orujov received Israel's Chief Rabbi Shlomo Omar, who is on visit to Azerbaijan, Russia's Chief Rabbi Berel Lazar and accompanying persons.

Orujov said Azerbaijan is the only country of the former empire, which has no anti-Semitism, religious discrimination.

"There are not any scientific and educational, cultural, industrial and other spheres in our country, where Jews are not represented by their fruitful work. Our Jewish citizens demonstrated heroism in restoration of Azerbaijan's independence, in fights for Karabakh, " Orujov said.

Russia's Chief Rabbi Berel Lazar and the delegation's other members said that Azerbaijan, whose population mostly is Muslim, has always kindly treated the Jews, and various Jewish religious communities have never felt anti-Semitism here.
