Azerbaijan and the Venice Commission have established beneficial cooperation since 2001 when the country joined the Council of Europe, Venice Commission representative Tanya Gerwien said today at a conference on constitutional mechanisms for protecting human rights and freedoms devoted to the fifteenth anniversary of the Azerbaijani Constitution.

A draft document was presented via referendum and independent Azerbaijan's first Constitution was adopted on Nov. 12, 1995.

Ever since, Azerbaijan has celebrated Nov. 12 as the Constitution Day.

Protecting human rights is a priority in a democratic society, Gerwien said. According to her, every year the European Court of Justice receives nearly 129,000 cases and every effort should be made to solve issues relating to human rights in the primary instances.
