Schools and kindergartens closed in earthquake affected Azerbaijani region

From May 16, secondary schools and kindergartens are temporarily closed in Zagatala region affected by the earthquake, first deputy chief executive of the region, the Emergency Situations Commission chairman Elman Ramazanov told Trend on Wednesday. Zagatala region is located in the north-west of Azerbaijan in 411 kilometres from Baku.

From May 16, secondary schools and kindergartens are temporarily closed in Zagatala region affected by the earthquake, first deputy chief executive of the region, the Emergency Situations Commission chairman Elman Ramazanov told Trend on Wednesday. Zagatala region is located in the north-west of Azerbaijan in 411 kilometres from Baku.

He said the closure of schools and kindergartens are due to continuing tremors in the region and aims at preventing possible victims. This issue is coordinated with the Education Ministry, he said.

According to Ramazanov, the number of educational institutions which are in poor condition has increased in number. This means that 47 out of the 61 schools, two gyms and 28 preschool institutions are in an emergency condition.

An earthquake measuring seven points jolted the Zagatala region at 09:40 on May 7. Eight more tremors were recorded during the day. As a result of the earthquake about 3000 houses and 124 social facilities were destroyed in the Zagatala region. There were no deaths or serious injuries reported.

Three more earthquakes were recorded in the region yesterday.
