Azerbaijan, Argentina eye to establish transportation of goods

Chairman of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC Javid Gurbanov held a meeting with Argentine ambassador to Azerbaijan Sergio Perez Gunella, the Azerbaijan Railways CJSC told Trend.

The parties discussed the possible prospects for bilateral cooperation, the existing potential of both countries in the railway sector.

During the meeting, Gurbanov spoke about Azerbaijan’s transport and logistics capabilities, active participation in international transport corridors, steps that should be taken to increase transit cargo transportation.

Moreover, the proposals related to the transportation of Argentine goods and the initial scheme of its route were voiced. The possibilities of cooperation with maritime and railway companies of transit countries for more efficient transportation of goods between Azerbaijan and Argentina were discussed.

Thus, the option of transporting goods from container terminals and ports in Argentina with further delivery to the Turkish port of Mersin, from there to the Georgian port of Poti, then via railways to Azerbaijan and Russia was considered.

Moreover, it is possible to transport Argentine goods to the Central Asian countries through the Azerbaijani port of Alat. The parties considered the possibility of transporting local goods to Argentina upon the same scheme.

Some 3,334 tons of cargo were imported from Argentina to Azerbaijan in 2020.

The volume of transit cargo between the two countries amounted to 28 tons, the volume of export-oriented cargo – 37,411 tons.

Ferrous metals and mineral building materials, as well as bread and food products, prevailed among the transported goods.
