Azerbaijan Intensifies Development of Projects to be Financed by IDB in 2007 FY

Khalilova / The Azerbaijani Government has expanded the feasibility studies of two projects - restoration of the water supply system in six towns and the reconstruction of the Bahram-Tepe highway to be financed by the Islamic Development Bank (IDB), the Government reported. The project will cover the regions of Dashkasan, Gadabey, Davachi, Agjabadi, Balakan and Beylagan.

Technical documents are being developed by Azersu JSC and Azeravtoyolservis (attached to the Ministry of Transport).

The two projects were envisaged under a new cooperation program for 2007-09 and are included in the financing program of 2007 fiscal year which will end in April 2008. "In case that the projects are submitted to IDB by April 2008 and progress is achieved on them, we will have time to use the funds IBD allocated in its 2007-budget for Azerbaijan," a source at the Government said.

Three projects are planned to be submitted to the IDB this fiscal year in order to receive one privileged, one commercial credit and technical assistance. Besides these two projects, a grant is expected to be allocated for the development of a feasibility study for the reconstruction of the Mil-Garabah water manifold.

A total of ten projects are included under the program, their initial cost makes up $220mln.

Only five projects financed by IDB in Azerbaijan so far are under commercial conditions and their total amount was $166mln. They were intended for the construction of the Alat-Gazimahammad highway, first and second phases of the Mingachevir electric power station, the Ujar-Yevlakh highway and the Khachmaz power sub-station.
