Iran Keen to Improve Water Supplies to Tehran

Iran, Tehran / corr Trend V.Sharifov / The Iranian authorities are keen to improve the speed of electronic data delivery on quality and volume of drinkable water in the capital of Iran through upgrading the system and the construction of a fibre-optic cable. The cost of such a project will be confirmed in 2008. However, they did not state the duration of its implementation, the representative of the Water Management Center stated in talks with a group of journalists in Tehran.

Increase the pace of data collection on the consumed water will enable a quick response to spills in Tehran and overcome the flow of poor quality water.

Tehran, with its population of approximately 20mln people has 120 stations for the registration of quality and volume of consumed water and a center which receives online electronic data. Tehran's demand in water totals 29-39 cu m per second. Over the past 9 months residents of Iran have consumed 720mln cu m of water, representatives of the Center said.

Some 70% of water supplied to Tehran fell on land sources and the rest on underground sources, which is produced through 400 artesian wells. Five rigs purify water for Tehran.

According to 2006data, Iran has A population of 69mln people. Iran utilizes over 92% of water within the agriculture sector. This figure comprises 70% worldwide. Only 1.5% of water is used in industry in Iran.

Iran has employed over 120 consulting companies for water management in Iran and works with 220 contractors.
