Azerbaijani people up 12.2 percent for 10 years: state committee

According to the primary census of the people, the Azerbaijani people number 8.922 million on April 13-22, the State Committee on Statistics reported on July 10.

Earlier, the people's census was conducted on Jan. 15 in 1959, according to which the population was 3.684 million, 5.117 million - Jan. 15, 1970, 6.027 million - Jan. 17 in 1979, 7.021 million - Jan. 12 in 1989, 7.953 million - Jan. 27 in 1999.

The population grew by 969,000 people, or 12.2 percent for 10 years.

Under the first data of the last census, the country's urban population numbers 4.818 million or 54 percent of the total number and rural - 4.104 million (46 percent), the state committee on statistics reported.

The growing number of the urban population amounted to 765,000 people, while rural - 204,000 in 1999.

Men in the country number 4.372 million people, and women - 4.550 million which indicates women exceed men by 178,000 people.

According to the state committee's primary data, the population of Baku numbers 2.046 million with a 14.4-percent increase compared to 1999, the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic (NAR) - 398,000 people, including 115,000 - urban and  283,000 - rural. The population in the NAR has grown by12 percent over 10 years. Roughly 6.478 million people, including 2.657 million - urban and 3.821 million - rural live in Azerbaijan's other cities and regions.

Some 313,000 people (a 4.7-percent increase compared to 1999) live in Ganja, 310,000 (21.6 percent) people in Sumgayit, 96,000 (2.1 percent) in Mingachevir, 77,000 people (10 percent ) in Shirvan, 63,000 (3.3 percent) in Shaki, 58,000 people (11.5 percent) in Yevlakh, 55,000 people (unchanged) in Khankandi, 92,000 people (3.2 times) in Khirdalan and 50,000 (4.2 percent) in Lankaran.
