Azerbaijan to introduce int'l food standards

Azerbaijan will introduce international food standards Codex Alimentarius, Head of the department of technical regulation and standardization of the Azerbaijani State Committee for Standardization, Metrology and Patents Sabig Abdullayev said.

"Implementation of Codex Alimentarius is the main purpose of Food and Technical Committee, acting under the State Committee on Standardization," Abdullayev said.

Abdullayev also said the committee actively cooperates with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to introduce a new food standard in Azerbaijan.

American expert, who will develop a priority action plan to implement this standard in six months, is expected to visit Azerbaijan in November.

Codex Alimentarius is expected to be implemented in 2010, Abdullayev said.

Codex Alimentarius (Latin "Food Code") is a set of internationally accepted standards for food products. This edition contains the standards governing the production of food from various types of cereals and legumes.
