Iran headed the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) biannual General Conference(GC) held in the UN headquarters in Vienna on Monday.

IRNA news agency reported that this meeting will run until Friday and presidents, premiers and industry ministers from over 100 countries will participate in the event.

At the beginning of the conference Iran's permanent representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Ali-Asghar Soltanieh was chosen to head the conference.

Ali Akbar Mehrabian Minister of Industry and Mines leads the Iranian envoy in the meeting.

The GC is UNIDO's supreme policymaking organ where all member states meet once every two years.

It determines the guiding principles and policies of the Organization, approves the budget and work program of UNIDO.

Every four years, the GC appoints the Director-General.

The current Director-General, Mr. Kandeh Yumkella (Sierra Leone), who assumed office in December 2005 will be re-elected in this conference for another term.

The GC also elects the members of the Industrial Development Board and the Program and Budget Committee.

On the sidelines of the conference Iran will hold an exhibition of its industrial achievements, especially in the field of green industries and renewable energies.
