The Georgian Foreign Ministry issued a statement about rumors that Russia will assign an international code to the central airport in Sukhumi.

De facto Abkhazian Prime Minister Sergei Shamba recently said the airport would receive a Russian code, Georgia's Foreign Ministry said.

The ministry stressed that Russia has no jurisdiction to assign a four-alpha beta code to any airport instead of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The ICAO has exclusive competence to make such decisions. Such codes are published in the document ICAO 7910: Location Indicators.

"Thus, the statement by Shamba is another attempt to mislead people," the ministry said.
