Nissan Motor Co is to shut down production at two US plants for three days because of a delay in receiving engine electronics from Hitachi Ltd, news reports said Thursday.

The Japanese automaker is to close production in Smyrna, Tennessee, and Canton, Mississippi, on Thursday, Friday and Monday, the Nikkei business daily reported.

The same problem has also halted production at four Nissan plants in Japan from Wednesday to Friday, DPA reported.

The automaker is to lose 15,000 units of production from the three-day shutdown in Japan, the daily said.

Hitachi said it was not able to supply the engine control modules when promised because one of its suppliers, Switzerland's STMicroelectronics NV, was unable to provide computer chips because of high global demand for semiconductors.

Nissan's Smyrna plant has the capacity annually to produce 550,000 vehicles, such as the Altima, Maxima, Xterra, Frontier and Pathfinder models.

The assembly plant in Canton has an annual production capacity of 400,000 vehicles, including the Altima, Quest, Armada, Titan and Infiniti QX56.
