Minister: Azerbaijan plans to complete construction of new port by 2013

Construction of a new international trade seaport in Azerbaijan (Alat settlement) is scheduled to be completed by 2013, Azerbaijani Transport Minister Ziya Mammadov said today within an international regional business forum "Strategic Partnership 1520: The Caucasian region".

According to him, the construction of the new port covers 2010-2013.

"By 2015, the new port will be capable of accepting 15 million tons of cargo per year," Mammadov said.

He said at present Azerbaijan attaches great importance to all areas of the transport sector. Extensive works are underway in the direction of reconstruction and construction of local and main highways, which are part of major international transport corridors.

Along with the construction and reconstruction of the highways works are underway on the construction of bridges, crossings and other elements of road infrastructure.

Azerbaijan is also actively involved in the railway project "North-South", intended to connect Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran's railway systems.
