Azerbaijan, Baku, Oct. 13 / Trend I.Khalilova /

Azerbaijan is interested in joining the Viking Container Traffic Route to be realized by the connection to the TRACECA transport corridor, Azerbaijani Deputy Transport Minister Musa Panahov said.

"Today, we, like all other countries, are also trying to diversify all our traffic flows, including handling and transportation of goods. So we are also interested in new routes that will connect our region with Ukraine, Belarus and the Baltic countries and the Baltic Sea via the Black Sea," he said.

This question, Panahov said, is also discussed with the Lithuanian Transport Minister, who is on visit to Azerbaijan.

"Lithuania is also interested in Azerbaijan's participation in this project, and we will consider appropriate measures to join the Viking corridor," Panahov said.

Azerbaijan should implement internal procedures, which requires appropriate treatment, to join the basic agreement on the project.

"We are studying this agreement and after receiving feedback we will make an appropriate request to join the project," Panahov said.

The project stipulates extension of the existing Viking Container Traffic Route, which currently runs from Klaipeda to Ilyichevsk, from Ilyichevsk to Poti and Batumi through ferry line.

It is supposed to connect the transport corridors TRACECA and the Viking to increase the export and transit. The Viking Project high-speed container train delivers goods for 50 hours from Lithuania's Klaipeda port to Ukraine's Illyichevsk.

The TRACECA includes 12 states and Viking - Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine.
