Construction of Istanbul’s third airport has been completed by 55 percent, Turkish media quoted Huseyin Keskin, CEO of Istanbul Grand Airport (IGA) Airport Operation, as saying July 25.

Keskin said that 53,000 square meters of the airport’s territory will account for Duty Free shops, 32,000 square meters will go to various restaurants and around 100,000 square meters will be leased for the sale of goods of various international brands.

Currently, the airports of Istanbul receive planes of 46 airlines, he said, adding that their number is expected to increase to 100 with the commissioning of the third airport.

“It will be possible to fly in 350 directions through the new airport,” Keskin added.

The first part of the airport will be fully commissioned in late October 2018.

Earlier, the air transport department of Turkish Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications told Trend that the construction of the airport will cost 10 billion Turkish liras.

The third airport is being built near the Lake Terkos in northern Istanbul.

Initially, the airport will serve 90 million passengers per year, and further, this figure will increase to 150 million.

Currently, 55 airports operate in Turkey.
