Cargo transportation in Azerbaijan increases

In January-August 2017, the transport sector of Azerbaijan transported 150.1 million tons of cargo, which is 1.9 percent more than the same period in 2016, the State Statistics Committee said in a report.

For the year, the volume of non-oil cargo transportation grew by 3.8 percent and amounted to 113.7 million tons.

Meanwhile, 81.5 percent of the total volume of goods transported in January-August accounted for the private sector.

Of the total cargo, 64 percent were transported by road, 26 percent by pipeline, 6.3 percent by rail, 3.6 percent by sea, and 0.1 percent by air.

Further, for the first eight months of the year, 1.26 billion people were transported, which is 2.3 percent more than in 2016. Some 88 percent of passengers was transported by road, 11.8 percent by subway.

The report also said that 9.4 million tons of cargo were transported by rail, which is 3.9 percent less than in January-August 2016.

By sea, 5.33 million tons of cargo were transported during the reporting period, which is 52 percent more than in the eight months of 2016.

According to the report, 49.3 percent of the transported goods fell on the oil cargo. The volume of cargo handled in the ports of Azerbaijan in January-August amounted to 6.91 million tons.

By road, 96.2 million tons of cargo were transported during the reporting period, which is 2.2 percent higher than in the same period of 2016.

The volume of passenger transportation by road for this period amounted to 1.11 billion people (an increase of 1.7 percent compared to the January-August period in 2016). 96.1 percent of passengers were transported by buses, 3.9 percent by passenger cars.

By air transport, for the first eight months of 2017, 1.6 million passengers were transported, which is 19.1 percent more than in January-August 2016.
