The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the United Nations Green Climate Fund have provided Tajikistan with $88 million to complete the final stage of reconstruction of the Kayrakkum Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) and to improve electricity supply in the country.

"The funds will be spent on implementation of the second and final stage of rehabilitation and modernization of the 60-year-old HPP, which will provide electricity to half a million people. As part of the modernization, the plant will implement innovative measures to ensure resistance to climate change," the press service of the EBRD said in a message.

The complete reconstruction of the HPP will increase its capacity from 126 MW to 174 MW.

“Tajikistan is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change. The glacial hydrology of the country and the hydropower sector are very sensitive to the effects of climate change. The project offers a model of how carefully planned investments can make hydropower more sustainable,” according to the EBRD.

The EBRD has invested about $700 million in various sectors of Tajikistan's economy. The organization actively supports Tajikistan's efforts to adapt to the effects of climate change.
