Kazakhstan increases copper ore mining by 5%

In the first 10 months of 2018, mining of copper ore in Kazakhstan amounted to 85.5 million tons (5.4 percent more than in the same period last year) , Trend reports citing Energyprom.kz.

At the same time, mining of copper concentrates totaled 10.4 million tons (10.9 percent up), and of copper-zinc ores — 4.1 million tons (1.7 percent down). The largest growth was in mining of copper in copper concentrate – 29.4 percent year-on-year to 470,500 tons.

The main miners of copper ore were the East Kazakhstan (37.1 percent of the total production in the country), Pavlodar (30.3 percent) and Karaganda (27.6 percent) regions.

Production of refined copper and copper alloys for the first 10 months of 2018 amounted to 363,600 tons, which is 3.8 percent more than a year earlier.

In the first 9 months of 2018, exports of refined copper and copper alloys in physical terms decreased by 17.2 percent, and in monetary terms — by 6.3 percent. The main importers of the Kazakh copper are China, UAE, UK and Turkey.

It is worth noting that Kazakhstan has huge reserves of copper ore and ranks 7th in the world in copper mining, 92 percent of which is exported abroad. The country’s largest deposit of copper sandstones ore is Zhezkazgan.
