New airport in Istanbul serves over 90,000 passengers

In January 2019, the new airport in Istanbul served 92,100 passengers, Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of Turkey told Trend.

Domestic flights served 59,900 passengers, while the international ones served only 32,200.

The ministry noted that in January 2019, 794 flights were carried out, 462 of which were domestic flights, and 332 were international.

During the period, the volume of cargo transportation at the new airport amounted to 905 tons, 429 tons of which accounted for domestic flights, while 476 tons were carried by international flights.

The opening ceremony of the new airport took place in Istanbul on October 29, 2018.

The third airport of Istanbul was built in the vicinity of Lake Terkos, located in the northern part of the city.

The first airport in Turkey was built in 1912 and was used for military purposes. The Istanbul Airport was first opened for international flights in 1953, and was renamed in honor of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey, in 1985.
