Trend:

No port in Iran is under the US sanctions, Deputy Managing Director of Iran Ports and Maritime Organization Hadi Haghshenas told Trend.

Responding to the question that why the US exempted Chabahar port from sanctions he said that this is a rumor spread by the media.

"Most of the media make this mistake by saying that only Chabahar port is exempted from US sanctions, but no Iranian port is under sanctions. There are currently shipments coming from Northern and Southern ports of Iran, but Indian and Afghan officials were concerned that these ports may get sanctioned, so they insisted on more exemptions," he explained.

He went on to add that Chabahar port is an important strategic port in Iran and it can be a source of imports of goods and play a special role in regional cargo transit.

Haghshenas further noted the importance of Chabahar port to India and China.

"Although the Chabahar port is located at Gulf of Oman but it’s the closest port to Indian Ocean and the only port that can harbor big ships, so the location of the port is very sensitive and important," he said.

He further said that maritime tourism can boost the port's capacities, but these advantages can only be considered when all the necessary facilities are ready.

He also indicated the importance of the recent conference in Chabahar, saying it is good for the port's development.

Referring to the International Conference on Development of Chabahar port, Haghshenas said the conference is attended by representatives from 35 countries and the event's major aim is to identify the capacities of Chabahar port and the Special Free Trade Zone for cargo transit.
