By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Over 5,000 Georgia's farmers have already benefited from the government’s agro-diesel program, said Agriculture Minister Levan Davitashvili, Trend reports via Georgian media.

He noting that farmers have received more than 2.7 million litres of diesel for one lari cheaper per liter than the market price.

The agro-diesel program gives farmers the opportunity to buy diesel 1 lari (31 cents) per liter cheaper than the market price if they have between 0.25 to 100 hectares of agricultural land.

Davitashvili noted that as of today, the market price of diesel is in the range of 1.9-2.06 lari ($0.59-$0.65) per liter.

"When purchasing diesel at stations, the price of 1 liter is 1.16 lari ($0.36), and in case of purchase from wholesalers, which means purchasing more than 1,500 liters of fuel, the price of fuel is 1.07 lari ($0.34) per liter,” said Davitashvili.

Minister of Agriculture Davitashvili said that the program will continue in the following years as it is one of the most important programs for farmers in terms of subsidies.

The budget of the program is 40 million lari ($12.53 million).

Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia said on May 12 that under the agricultural anti-crisis plan about 200,000 farmers will receive support from the state and 300 million lari ($94 million) will be spent overall to help them.
