Large harvest of potatoes, onions expected in Turkmenistan

Turkmenistan plans to get 155,400 tons of potatoes from 11,100 hectares of land and 95,000 tons of onions from 3,800 hectares of land, Trend reports with reference to Business Turkmenistan information portal.

The state allocated additional 2,500 hectares of land for planting onions and potatoes to be harvested this year, said the report.

One part of the harvest will be available in retail, another part will be supplied to facilities of a number of ministries and other state agencies, while the remainder will be stored.

In recent years, new large storage facilities have been built in the country Lebap, Dashoguz and Mary regions, where up to 3,000 tons of fruit and vegetables can be stored. Another storage facility was built in the Akhal region for 2,000 tons of fruit and vegetables.

At a recent meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov highlighted the need to raise the production of fruit and vegetable crops in the country to increase the quality of the products and their supply to the local market.

Agriculture is one of the most important branches of Turkmenistan's economy. The main types of agricultural products are wheat, cotton, rice, sugar beet, fodder, fruit and vegetables.
