Iran discloses volume, value of purchased wheat

BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 20

More than 6.07 million tons of wheat worth 150 trillion rials (about $3.57 billion) were purchased from farmers in Iran from April 4 to date, said Mohammad Taghi Tabatabaee, head of public relations department of Government Trading Corporation of Iran, Trend reports citing the corporation's website.

According to Tabatabaee, so far, 62 percent of the plan for the purchase of wheat has been fulfilled.

Tabatabaee added that 1.2 million tons of wheat were purchased in Khuzestan Province, 818,000 tons - in Fars Province, 813,000 tons - in Golestan Province and 430,000 tons - in Kermanshah Province.

"About 3.5 trillion rials ($83.3 million) was paid to the wheat farmers yesterday [July 19]," he said.

The official stressed that the remaining 20 trillion rials (about $476 million) is expected to be paid to farmers by the end of the week (week starts on Saturday in Iran).

Tabatabaee noted that so far, 261,000 tons of rapeseed worth 11.7 trillion rials (about $278 million) have been purchased from farmers in Iran.

The official emphasized that 1 trillion rials (about $23.8 million) was paid to farmers in the current Iranian week, and the remaining 1 trillion rials (about $23.8 million) will be paid soon.

The price of ordinary wheat to be purchased from farmers in the current planting year is set at 25,000 rials (about 59 cents), and of durum wheat - at 26,000 rials (about 61 cents) per kilogram in the current Iranian year (began March 20, 2020). The price of rapeseed is set at 46,600 rials (about $1.1) per kilogram.

A number of products, including wheat, tea, rice and other products are purchased from farmers by a state company under a guarantee in Iran.
