Iran-Iraq Shalamcheh border reopens after week of closure

TEHRAN, Iran, Aug. 10

The Deputy CEO of Iran's Arvand Free Zone said that the Shalamcheh International Border was reopened.

"The Shalamcheh trade border which was closed from Eid al-Adha on July 31 to Eid al-Qadir on August 8, has reopened on August 9,” Deputy CEO of Iran's Arvand Free Zone Seyed Ali Mousavi said, Trend reports citing IRNA.

“The two countries' merchants resumed trade,” he added. “Non-oil exports, including food, fruits and vegetables, protein materials and technical and engineering services, have been resumed at the international border of Shalamcheh after months of closure due to Coronavirus outbreak,” said Mousavi.

According to Iranian media, since the reopening of the border, 21,000 tons of non-oil goods worth $95 million exported to Iraq.

Shalamcheh border is located 15 km from Iran's Khorramshahr city and 25 km from Basra, Iraq.

Prior to the closure of the Shalamcheh border by Iraq (from Eid al-Adha to Eid al-Qadir), more than 200 trucks carrying a variety of Iranian exported goods and 150 Iraqi trucks crossed over the Shalamcheh border per day.

Arvand Free Zone with an area of 37,400 hectares is located at the northwest of the Persian Gulf which is including the cities of Abadan, Khorramshahr and Minoshahr (Mino Island).

This Free Zone is of special importance in the neighborhood of Iraq and Kuwait.
