Kazakhstan decides to terminate 'KazSat-2R' satellite project

Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Digital Development, Innovation and Aerospace Industry decided to terminate the KazSat-2R project in favor of innovative solutions, the ministry’s head Bagdat Musin said at a meeting with the country’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Trend reports on Feb.19.

Musin summing up the activities of the ministry for 2020, spoke about the prospects for the development of digitalization, as well as on the implementation of the tasks, stated by the president in his address, aimed at increasing the availability of Internet communications, including in rural areas.

The minister informed the president about approval of the requirements for the quality of communication. According to him, the minimum quality thresholds have been determined for 3G/4G networks. Previously, the minimum threshold for communication quality wasn't regulated.

The ministry has developed amendments to the legislation on the allocation of radio frequencies in the auction format, which is important in the process of transition to 5G. Also, amendments have been prepared, according to which the amount of fines for violation of communication quality parameters will be increased to 1,000 MCI (minimum calculated indicators).

Musin informed the head of state about the steps taken to ensure the availability of public services. He also spoke about the introduction of biometric identification into the eGov mobile application, which significantly reduced the time for registration and receiving services by the population.

Tokayev instructed to speed up the work on the provision of public services through this application.

The minister further informed about the transformation process of the Digital Kazakhstan National Project, the main focus of which will be aimed at ensuring interaction between the state and citizens and digitizing all life situations related to solving the problems of the population.

Besides, Musin informed about the development of the Kazakh satellite communications system ‘KazSat’. So, a decision was made to terminate the KazSat-2R project in favor of innovative solutions, including those related to new generation satellite communication groups. This, according to him, will save billions of tenge of budget funds.
