EU implements infrastructure projects in six Georgian municipalities

The European Union (EU) supports infrastructure projects worth 2.5 million lari ($735,948) ongoing in six Georgian municipalities, Trend reports via Georgian media.

As reported, infrastructure projects are being conducted in the Imereti and Guria regions, which are part of the first phase of the Georgian government’s 220 million lari ($64.7 million) Pilot Integrated Regional Development Grant Programme (PiRDP), of which 186 million lari ($54.7 million) comes from EU funding.

The six projects are part of the 11 initial projects financed by the PiRDP, which was launched in June 2020.

They include:

- Renovation of the road and pedestrian bridge to stimulate local business and promote tourism in Labajouri, Imereti;
- Construction of a park in Sachkhere, Imereti;
- Development of a tourist and business development service center in the village of Vartsikhe, Imereti;
- Renovation of a public square in Samtredia, Imereti;
- Construction of one km of road along the 'Tea Route' to develop tourism in the village of Bakhvi, Guria;
- Renovation of two road bridges and 100 m long riverbed wall, arrangement of 173 LED lights to develop a recreational area in Chokhatauri, Guria.

The development of regional policy in Georgia is one of the areas of the EU-Georgia cooperation under the Association Agreement. The Pilot Integrated Regional Development Program 2020-2022, co-financed through the budget support scheme by the EU, was approved by the government in December 2019.
