The volume of bony fish caught by Iran from the Caspian Sea amounted to 2,865 tons since the beginning of the current fishing season in the Caspian Sea (from October 7, 2021 to March 11, 2022), the Director-General for Fishing Affairs of Iran Fisheries Organization, Mokhtar Akhondi said, Trend reports referring to the Iranian Ministry of Agriculture Jihad.

According to Akhondi, 1,360 tons of kutum, 1,185 tons of mullet, 250 tons of carp, 72 tons of other species of fish were caught from the Caspian Sea during the reporting period.

Reportedly, Iran’s bony fishing from Caspian Sea decreased by 17 percent for the reporting period, compared to the same period last Iranian year. Meanwhile, in the same period last Iran year, Iran had caught 3,460 tons of bony fish from the Caspian Sea.

The director general stressed that the main reason for the decline in fishing is the unfavorable weather conditions in the Caspian Sea.

Akhondi also noted that 1,292 tons of bony fish were caught in Gilan Province, 1,388 tons in Mazandaran Province and 185 tons in Golestan Province over the mentioned period.

“The fishing has increased by 7 percent in Gilan Province, while has decreased by 28 percent in Mazandaran Province and 43 percent in Golestan Province, compared to the same period last Iranian year,” he said.

As many as 117 out of 123 fishing companies in Iran have operated within the mentioned period. Of this, 49 are in Gilan Province, 52 in Mazandaran Province and 16 in Golestan Province.

Iran's bony fishing season in the Caspian Sea begins on October 7 and lasts until April 4.
