Number of waste management offers grows up

Business Materials 25 April 2006 14:52 (UTC +04:00)

Azeri Government received offers from more than ten companies of Japan, Canada, Germany, Russia, Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, that specialize in waste management. Only EBARA of Japan conducted its presentation in Azerbaijan to date, but there are some other Japanese companies willing to present their technologies, governmental officials told Trend.

EBARA is one of the industrys leaders. Its experts examined a landfill in Balakhany and estimated its condition as bad. They submitted a number of questions to Azeri side regarding preliminary offers of the company. Afterwards, they will begin studying the garbage composition, soil conditions for installation of one or several facilities, ecological requirements, atmosphere emissions, etc. A priority-driven issue for the government at construction of waste management facility is obtaining power, mineral fertilizers and construction materials.

Japanese experts offer solving the problems as whole, and namely restore the soil over the landfill area. The garbage composition shall be identified prior to obtaining power. EBRDs calculations show that 150MW of power may be obtained from burning 600 tons of garbage. The government disputed these calculations and performed independent calculations that showed a figure of 30MW at the same capacity of the factory.

To bur the garbage, it should be preliminarily sorted due to metal sheets in some packages (which may result in incinerators damaging). Japanese company offered to sort the garbage by 7 sorts, as it is done in Japan, and such sorting trashboxes should be located in each building, which is impossible for Azerbaijan today.

The project is estimated at E 350mln, from which E50mln is EBRDs issue.
